Mission and Vision Development

Every person in a successful organization will be able to tell you two things:
- What the organization does (Mission) ; and
- What the organization is working to become (Vision)
The mission will be clear and descriptive. If you hand it to a stranger on the street, he or she should be able to tell you, after reading it once, what your organization does and something about its fundamental values. It should be short, under 100 words. It should be memorable if not memorizable. It should not feel like it was written by a committee.
Your vision will be still shorter and will usually be less definitive. However, it will be strong and guiding in nature, setting in broad terms the goals of the organization and, if done well, will keep you reaching just beyond your grasp for many years.
